How Does Your Garden Grow?

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides. ~W.E. Johns, The Passing Show

When we moved into our current home, one of the things I was most excited about was the yard. After 8 years of shuffling around between dorm rooms, student housing, microscopic apartments, and a brief stint in a suburban mega-mansion, it was such a relief to move into our very own house. I love this house. It is so absolutely right for our family. It is the right size, the place, the right price. It's a cute little cottage, built in 1955, with lots of built-ins and vintage details. I love it! But what I love the best is the yard.

When we first moved in, the yard was a mess. Untended and unloved for years, everything was either dead or covered with weeds. A sad little lemon tree sat and the end of yard, mostly dead. The first time we started digging up the yard, I was so discouraged; I didn't see any worms in the soil, if that's any indication of how neglected and unhappy the ground was.

And then, of course, we had a baby and he was rather high maintenance, so there wasn't nearly as much fixing it up as I would have liked. But the potential was always there, and finally, after three years, we're finally making progress. Finally! I feel like I have been waiting for this garden for years.

There isn't much growing right now, other than the lawn and the trees. I let it lie fallow over the winter, but won't you anticipate what's coming with me?

This is the side if our house - it was a MESS in January! I spent most of January and February making that little planter and laying the paving stones. I also organized all of the stuff back there and made a seed starting table.

This is our side yard. We just moved that tree there (it's Nate's anniversary tree), and I dug up the lawn to make those planters. A few days ago I planted sun flowers, watermelon, sugar pumpkins, and sweet peas. It's been like, 3 days? GROW ALREADY, PLANTS.

I am not the most patient gardener ever.

  1. Just don't pull a me: I planted beets in one section of garden, only to forget that I planted them and planted bush beans on top of the old seeds. Since the beans sprout quick and the beets are slow they are just now showing up. Oops. Oh well, it is too hot for the beets anyway now here in the desert. On that same note--I am drooling over your tomatoes since mine got hit by a late freeze two days ago! (and it is 90 today) yeesh!
